Volunteering to work at A-Kon can be a very rewarding and fun experience. It’s a great opportunity to meet new people, make new friends, and learn more about how A-Kon operates. Many of our volunteers come from all over and are fans, leaders, supporters or parents who actively participate in different communities represented at A-Kon. Being a volunteer at A-Kon is also a great way to gain experience and exposure to a variety of different skills that you can apply to your resume or current work environemnt. We’re always looking for hard working, dedicated individuals who want to broaden their horizons, test their skills, and make a difference for the communities that they belong to.

A-Kon is very friendly to first year volunteers. We are constantly working to improve the volunteer and learning system to make everyone’s volunteer experience the best it can be. The more information you provide us during your application process, the more we will work to try and match your placement with a team that fits your experience, skills and interests. This also means that if you’re an experienced volunteer, you don’t neccesarily have to start out in an entry level position. A-Kon also looks to promote from within. We’re always looking for ways to reward exceptional, dedicated and productive volunteers. Many of our current leaders were once entry level volunteers who were recognized for their excellence over time.

Being a volunteer can also be a frustrating process for some. In many ways, it’s like a job – sometimes, you can’t always get the time off to do all of the things you want. We want all of our volunteers to have time to enjoy the parts of the convention they really look forward to, but sometimes it doesn’t work out that way. The best way to ensure you have a good balance between work and fun is to communicate with your assigned staff head and try to be flexible with the hours you can work. Volunteering means you are willing to put the work before the fun, so make sure you are prepared to compromise if you have lots of things you want to do.

Here’s what you need to know (and be ok with) to volunteer…

  • The minimum age to volunteer at A-Kon is 18. In a few rare cases, some of our internal staffs require a higher minimum age requirement. While the minimum age requirement of 18 is strictly enforced, staff heads who run staffs with higher minimum age requirements may adjust them at their discretion.
  • All volunteers must abide by A-Kon’s rules and policies regarding behavior, attire, weapons, drugs, and alcohol; these policies are in place to protect staff, guests, and attendees from harm or liability. Additionally, Fort Worth city ordinances are strictly enforced by the police officers in and around the hotels and convention center.
  • All volunteers are required to submit to a criminal background check. Background checks will be processed by the Volunteer Coordinator and any information obtained will be shared with staff heads and managers prior to your acceptance as a volunteer. A-Kon® also reserves the right to run additional background checks as it deems necessary and may use this information to terminate your volunteer status at any time and at it’s sole discretion.
  • All volunteers will initially be placed in the general volunteers queue while they await their assignment to a staff. As staffs request headcount, volunteers will be assigned from the general volunteers queue to their assigned staff. Volunteers will be notified when they are reassigned. Returning staff members and staff who are specifically recruited for a specific staff may be given a staff code to use when they fill out their form. Using this code will assign you directly to the staff to which it belongs once you pass your background check. If you are expecting to work on a specific staff, be sure to obtain your staff code from your staff head.
  • All volunteers must carry a valid picture I.D. (Driver’s License, State I.D. Card, Passport, etc.) at all times while on shift and be willing to produce it when requested by a volunteer coordinateor, manager, executive or police officer at the event.
  • All volunteers must consent to a full photo release for the event and must agree to provide or allow a photo to be taken by the Volunteer Coordinator to be used for emergency identification purposes.
  • All volunteers must be willing to consent to signing written agreements specifically outlining volunteer rules, expectations, proceedure and policies. It is always your right as a volunteer to refuse to sign anything you don’t agree with; however, refusing to sign this documentation may result in the immediate termination of your volunteer status and benefits.
  • Crash space is available for some volunteers and is offered based on number of hours worked. Crash space usage is limited exclusively to the member of the staff to which it is assigned. Anyone found in violation of this policy will be removed from the room, and their volunteer status revoked for the weekend.
